Bauer UK’s Absolute radio partnered with Sony Pictures for the release of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. Absolute was the only paid media partner for the UK campaign and decided to promote the movie by transporting listeners to Hollywood itself and delivered a week of exciting breakfast programming tied to the movie.

Launched in 2015, Otto Radio offers users a way to listen to spoken-word audio – primarily news, podcasts and audiobooks – personalised to each listener’s unique set of interests. In much the same way that Pandora leverages the Music Genome Project to personalise music, Otto Radio personalises news, podcasts, audiobook recommendations and other audio storytelling formats. Otto Radio cooperates with audio publishers and offers them an additional distribution channel and repurposing of their spoken word content.

Voice-activated, artificial intelligence assistants – such as Alexa – have the potential to be a truly transformative technology. And, as they exist primarily in a world of sound rather than vision, they offer radio some very interesting possibilities for the future.

While earlier voice-activated assistants, such as Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana, have relied heavily on the screen as primary interface, Alexa employs audio for both stimulus and response. The South African market is dominated by the state broadcaster while private stations are mostly regional. One of YFM’s main challenges is how to remain top-of-mind for clients and agencies when they decide on a media plan. Step one was YFM’s decision to sponsor the radio category of The Loeries (creative awards similar to the Cannes Lions) for three years in a row, which delivered exposure amongst creative agencies. Step two was to build on this exposure – YFM invited creative agencies to submit their ideas for a campaign and offered to produce the best creations and put them on air. The objective was to position YFM as a platform that allows the expression of creative ideas that are not feasible with other media. The long-term goal was of course to increase advertising revenue.

This report offers an overview of the methodologies used to measure radio across Europe. egta’s objective is to give readers a better understanding of the range of techniques and technologies in use, and insights into the effects of introducing electronic measurement. Radio Audience Measurement is carried out either by declarative means (day-after recall (DAR) or diaries) or through the use of electronic (passive) technology. The current state of play in Europe can be found in Figure 01. This report also contains an analysis of the benefits and limitations of each methodology. The document includes a more in-depth look at several markets that have introduced or that have run trials of electronic measurement. The US uses the Nielsen trademarked Personal People Meter (PPM) for radio in a number of the country’s largest designated market areas (DMAs), with diaries for the remaining DMAs. Electronic measurement has been introduced for the radio advertising currency in a number of European countries, including Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and tests have been carried out in several other markets. Representatives from the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy – all countries that have recently introduced or trialled new methodologies – provided interviews for this document, which also draws on multiple reports, forecasts and estimates, data from egta members and a telephone survey of audience measurement institutes in order to compile the necessary data.

The topic of this week’s egtabite - Get it on the Radio - is the name of an innovative B2B campaign by Var, the sales house for public radio in the north of Belgium. The campaign took place during November and December last year, and it promoted the main strengths of radio in a fun and catchy way across several media, including radio, online and print. How to best convince advertisers, media agencies, partners and potential advertisers of the power of radio? Var’s answer was to take strong facts that support radio as a medium and turn them into an attention-grabbing audiovisual campaign. The idea was to create a funky song that promotes the main virtues of radio together with a retro pixel animation video and other visuals.

Creating a successful B2B campaign can be very challenging as clients attend one prestigious event after another and it may be hard for broadcasters and sales houses alike to come up with something surprising, new and engaging. TV3 decided to think out of the box and put together a special dinner that succeeded in building strong personal relationships and giving an unforgettable experience to both employees and clients. At the same time they drew attention to their brand, TV3’s new slogan – “strong characters, strong feelings” and the new autumn programming schedule.

egtabite 36: Strengthening brand recognition: an advertising jingle turned into a song

In 2007 popular Belgian musicians Alec Mansion and Thom Dewatt wrote and performed a 30-second jingle called “La cuisine de ma vie” (The kitchen of my life) for the kitchen brand eggo. This jingle has since become strongly associated with the eggo brand due to it being used in all their TV and Radio spots.

In early 2013 the authors decided to turn this jingle into a real full length song entitled “La chanson de ma vie” (The song of my life). This song was then made available on YouTube and iTunes and played on radio stations - including the most popular station for the French-speaking part of Belgium, Bel RTL - for several weeks.

For the past month, Spanish audiences have witnessed the combined efforts of the whole advertising industry united behind the first initiative of its kind: “Publicidad Sí!” (“Yes to advertising!”). A total of 32 Spanish companies that represent the advertising industry have joined this platform, which also benefits from €1.7 million worth of advertising space that has been contributed by different sales houses (TV, online, outdoor and radio).
