W

orld Television Day – 21

November – was declared by

the United Nations in 1996 to reflect

the values of television as a medium,

including its many roles within

society. Largely uncelebrated, the

opportunities offered by a single day

dedicated to television represented

something of a missed opportunity,

until egta and the Association of

Commercial Television in Europe

(ACT) galvanised the industry and

launched the first of several annual

initiatives in 2012.

In its first year, the World Television

Day initiative was primarily designed

to reach decision makers within the

European institutions and the trade

press.

ACT and egta reached out to world

leaders, sports personalities, movie

stars, leading politicians and a host

of other influencers to offer them the

opportunity to give their thoughts

on the role of television in society.

These testimonials were combined

with ten key messages about the

strength of television into a series

of communication tools, which

included a dedicated website at

www.worldtelevisionday.tv .
