orld Television Day – 21
November – was declared by
the United Nations in 1996 to reflect
the values of television as a medium,
including its many roles within
society. Largely uncelebrated, the
opportunities offered by a single day
dedicated to television represented
something of a missed opportunity,
until egta and the Association of
Commercial Television in Europe
(ACT) galvanised the industry and
launched the first of several annual
initiatives in 2012.
In its first year, the World Television
Day initiative was primarily designed
to reach decision makers within the
European institutions and the trade
press.
ACT and egta reached out to world
leaders, sports personalities, movie
stars, leading politicians and a host
of other influencers to offer them the
opportunity to give their thoughts
on the role of television in society.
These testimonials were combined
with ten key messages about the
strength of television into a series
of communication tools, which
included a dedicated website at
