BNR is The Netherlands’ only commercial news-radio station and is part of a strong print group - FD Mediagroep (FDMG). It has a selective, engaged audience and a strong reach, especially amongst business audiences.

BNR decided to react to market trends and to claim the Dutch on-demand audio market by building a thriving and profitable podcast business and become the synonym when it comes to podcasting. They developed a long-term strategy up to 2022 to achieve just that.

egtabite 219: Bringing radio to smart speakers

AI-powered assistants, voice user interface and specifically smart speakers such as Amazon Echo or Google Home are the topic in the audio industry. In order to excel in the online audio domain and to compete with the existing audio alternatives, radio brands should experiment and test various online audio products, learn about listeners’ expectations for audio entertainment to be more interactive and consider what radio can offer to meet them.

We covered the rise of voice activation and its importance for radio in our previous egtabites here  and here. Now that smart speakers are being sold, or are about to be launched in most European markets, egta compiled several examples of successful skills and apps developed by radio publishers as an inspiration for the possibilities this new platform offers on top of a simple online stream of radio stations.

egtabite 198: Otto Radio – personalising spoken word listening experiences

With this week’s egtabite we would like to introduce one of the innovative companies working in the audio area egta recently met with during the Radio Study Trip to California.

Launched in 2015, Otto Radio offers users a way to listen to spoken-word audio – primarily news, podcasts and audiobooks – personalised to each listener’s unique set of interests. In much the same way that Pandora leverages the Music Genome Project to personalise music, Otto Radio personalises news, podcasts, audiobook recommendations and other audio storytelling formats. Otto Radio cooperates with audio publishers and offers them an additional distribution channel and repurposing of their spoken word content.

One of the barriers is a lack of proper measurement tools and standards, recognised by publishers and advertisers. An industry-wide initiative in Sweden came up with a solution and developed the Swedish Podcast Measurement Standard – Poddindex. It went live in November 2017.

Sample-based and census-level measurement methodologies are being deployed to measure online audio listening, in some cases in combination to provide a holistic view of the audience across analogue and digital channels. KRONEHIT, the leading private radio station in Austria, commissioned a unique piece of research into listeners’ perceptions of four different audio streaming apps – Pandora Internet Radio, Spotify (free version), KRONEHIT and its main competitor Ö3 (the youth station from the Austrian public service broadcaster, ORF). A panel of 20 randomly selected female listeners, representing KRONEHIT's core audience, were given smartphones pre-loaded with the apps and asked to use them for at least one hour per day, after which they participated in focus groups and one-to-one interviews.

egtabite 09: Radio à la carte with diy.fm

The new DIY.fm radio player won the 2012 "Prix Europa", the European Broadcasting Festival for the best European television, radio and online productions, in the ‘online innovation’ category.

The platform allows listeners to listen to their own, individually assembled radio programmes. Taking advantage of digital technology and with the evolving audio consumption habits in mind, tpc - a subsidiary of Swiss Radio and Television - developed a new tool that allows existing audio content to be assembled in a ‘do it yourself’ personalised online channel.
