In addition to a successful TV campaign, radio generated incremental awareness of the Christmas promotion as well as sales uplift and significant ROI well over 1 euro. This campaign shows that radio is a great amplifier when added to the media mix. The results of the campaign were analysed via Audioeffekt, a joint research initiative of the two leading radio sales houses in Germany – AS&S and RMS. Voice-activated, artificial intelligence assistants – such as Alexa – have the potential to be a truly transformative technology. And, as they exist primarily in a world of sound rather than vision, they offer radio some very interesting possibilities for the future.

While earlier voice-activated assistants, such as Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana, have relied heavily on the screen as primary interface, Alexa employs audio for both stimulus and response. This is a challenge for brands, which have traditionally focussed on visual communication, and a great opportunity for radio – a medium that has refined the skilful use of audio to an art over the years.

The South African market is dominated by the state broadcaster while private stations are mostly regional. One of YFM’s main challenges is how to remain top-of-mind for clients and agencies when they decide on a media plan. Step one was YFM’s decision to sponsor the radio category of The Loeries (creative awards similar to the Cannes Lions) for three years in a row, which delivered exposure amongst creative agencies. Step two was to build on this exposure – YFM invited creative agencies to submit their ideas for a campaign and offered to produce the best creations and put them on air. The objective was to position YFM as a platform that allows the expression of creative ideas that are not feasible with other media. The long-term goal was of course to increase advertising revenue.

Stemming from the belief that the only limit to those who love binge viewing their favourite television series and movies is sleep, the French pay-TV operator Canal+ launched an innovative campaign to advertise its “all you can watch” VOD service – CanalPlay. The platform offers a large portfolio of content available anytime, anywhere on most devices, for €7 a month and is equally available to non-subscribers of Canal+. With the help of creative agency Buzzman, Canal+ came up with the idea to create a unique coffee brand – Insomny – that would promote their VOD service as well as attract new subscribers.

In 2007 popular Belgian musicians Alec Mansion and Thom Dewatt wrote and performed a 30-second jingle called “La cuisine de ma vie” (The kitchen of my life) for the kitchen brand eggo. This jingle has since become strongly associated with the eggo brand due to it being used in all their TV and Radio spots.

In early 2013 the authors decided to turn this jingle into a real full length song entitled “La chanson de ma vie” (The song of my life). This song was then made available on YouTube and iTunes and played on radio stations - including the most popular station for the French-speaking part of Belgium, Bel RTL - for several weeks.

Case study Sky Plus Estonia – remarkably high interaction

One broadcaster that has been incredibly successful in developing its social media strategy is the Estonian station Sky Plus. What stood out for us was the exceptionally large number of interactions Sky Plus has with its audience in a market that has relatively low penetration of Facebook users in comparison to markets such as France, Sweden, the UK or Belgium.

We would like to bring to your attention a groundbreaking initiative launched in the Belgian market this past Wednesday January 15th:  M.E.D.I.A. “Our Media Environment Deserves Ideas and Ambition”. This initiative was jointly launched by UMA, the Belgian Association of Media Agencies and the R12, an unofficial group which gathers 14 media sales houses that represent 90% of all media investments in Belgium and includes not only all of our egta members: IP Belgium, Q Group, RMB, SBS Belgium, Vmm and the Var) but also sales houses from other media.
