egta database on regulatory and self-regulatory frameworks applicable to TV advertising for alcoholic beverages in place across the EU

 Television advertising for alcoholic beverages is subject to a number of regulatory limitations in place at both EU and national levels and must comply with many different self‐regulatory standards and industry codes of conduct. These various safeguards complement each other at national level to ensure the highest level of responsibility in all broadcast advertising on any media platform.

Today, it is clear from the various political debates regarding marketing communications of alcoholic beverages that there is a lack of knowledge about the many safeguards already in place for television advertising. This is precisely the reason that, within the framework of the EU Alcohol & Health Forum, egta committed to create a user-friendly tool to provide comprehensive data on the regulatory and self-regulatory frameworks in place for TV alcohol advertising across Europe.

As a result of its commitment, egta is pleased to present this database, which will allow advertising and media professionals from Europe and worldwide to access detailed information on the existing safeguards that apply to TV alcohol advertising across 22 European Union member States and Switzerland. The information is up to date with new rules that have been set in many countries across the EU following the implementation of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive. Facilitating the exchange of best practices by advertising professionals, this initiative has the ultimate goal of promoting responsible advertising for alcoholic beverages across the EU. In turn, it could serve as a benchmarking tool for new media services providers not covered by the same level of requirements concerning alcohol advertising.
