egtabite 412: RMC digital radio and podcasts score high during the World Cup

We kick off our 2023 radio egtabites with an initiative from a French radio company that made the most of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar by pulling in fans and listeners across platforms, scoring impressive results for their digital extensions.

RMC (French talk, news and sports radio) was the official radio broadcaster to air the FIFA World Cup in 2022. During the games, the radio station put together an exceptional programme for listeners, including a digital “event radio” devoted 100% to the World Cup, featuring dedicated podcasts, social media content, live commentaries of all the matches from Qatar, and more.

egtabite 219: Bringing radio to smart speakers

AI-powered assistants, voice user interface and specifically smart speakers such as Amazon Echo or Google Home are the topic in the audio industry. In order to excel in the online audio domain and to compete with the existing audio alternatives, radio brands should experiment and test various online audio products, learn about listeners’ expectations for audio entertainment to be more interactive and consider what radio can offer to meet them.

We covered the rise of voice activation and its importance for radio in our previous egtabites here  and here. Now that smart speakers are being sold, or are about to be launched in most European markets, egta compiled several examples of successful skills and apps developed by radio publishers as an inspiration for the possibilities this new platform offers on top of a simple online stream of radio stations.

The campaign used radio spots for the Netherland’s largest insurance provider to trigger synchronised digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising: drivers who were likely exposed to the audio messaging were therefore also reached by the visual creative when they were in close proximity to the DOOH billboards.

Spectrum Medya is the largest radio broadcaster in Turkey but up until recently had very little digital presence. They stepped into the digital space by rolling all their offerings into one brand: Karnaval.com, turning Spectrum into a multi-platform media company whose portfolio now includes FM radio (5 terrestrial stations, including Virgin Radio Türkiye, with 65% of the Turkish audience), digital (17 digital radio stations), events (concert sponsorship and an integration with Ticketmaster), social presence (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) and KarnavalTV.com with exclusive short-form video content.
