egtabite 219: Bringing radio to smart speakers

AI-powered assistants, voice user interface and specifically smart speakers such as Amazon Echo or Google Home are the topic in the audio industry. In order to excel in the online audio domain and to compete with the existing audio alternatives, radio brands should experiment and test various online audio products, learn about listeners’ expectations for audio entertainment to be more interactive and consider what radio can offer to meet them.

We covered the rise of voice activation and its importance for radio in our previous egtabites here  and here. Now that smart speakers are being sold, or are about to be launched in most European markets, egta compiled several examples of successful skills and apps developed by radio publishers as an inspiration for the possibilities this new platform offers on top of a simple online stream of radio stations.

This week, egtabite brings you a cross media, programmatic advertising campaign involving radio ... but in an unusual way. The campaign used radio spots for the Netherland’s largest insurance provider to trigger synchronised digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising: drivers who were likely exposed to the audio messaging were therefore also reached by the visual creative when they were in close proximity to the DOOH billboards.

Spectrum Medya is the largest radio broadcaster in Turkey but up until recently had very little digital presence.
